But as language develops it is clear that there are calls to "go back" to some previous version of Presbyterianism by some, a call for purity, etc. This language is clearly indicative of sectarian patterns of behavior in terms of how sects originate. Indeed primitivism and purity are two very clear variables that predict this kind of action by a sub-group within a denomination.

Re: Blogging the Wake of the 218th PCUSA General Assembly

Is not the extreme differences on this issue not a sign that we are really talking about two different religions as J. Gresham Machen wrote about over 80 years ago? Is not the polarizing differences on this one issue a sign of a much deeper division on core issues and essentials of the faith? Is this not simply the most visibly issue of the massive divide between historic orthodox protestantism and naturalistic forms of liberalism and neoorthodoxy?

What is it that really unites this denomination? Is it a shared theology and faith? Clearly not! Is it a shared mission? Sometimes, but even there we are often very divided? Is it a romantic view of family unity that ultimately has nothing to do with New Testament unity? I think this is very often the truth. Or has it become fear of losing one's property? I pray that this is not the issue, but I find that it is among many leaders I have come to know.

You can find my posts at http://graceandlaw.blogspot...

Feel free to link to my blog and include my comments.
